I'm in San Francisco for the weekend and planned on renting a car for the last day here tomorrow. I was gonna go do some sight seeing outside the city and get to see what it's like to drive a "Chevy spark or similar". However, I just checked the dates I reserved it for and noticed I had put March by accident.. Changing the dates would have made it go up to like $100 instead of $40. Man what a bummer and boy do I feel dumb haha. Instead, I may try to rent one of those little yellow go-cars for a couple of hours. It seems entertaining but rather expensive. Also, I imagine they are booked solid for the holiday. But anyways, has anyone ever rented one? Worth it or just a tourist trap?

It's not a bad idea as long as you don't try to treat it like a real car and battle the traffic on 19th Ave or downtown because that thing is closer to a Vespa than a car. Every so often a confused visitor ends up in the middle of a busy freeway.
Truthfully, I'd rather just walk, bus, and take Uber when necessary. You can go just as far and see just as much plus people won't point, laugh, and/or swear because you're going 10-under.

I saw one of these in September when I was in San Diego, had to look it up as I never heard of them. They do seem expensive. I would be curious to know your take if you rent one. The people I saw were just ripping it in circles in a lot at Petco Park.

Haha yeah I'm more wondering how hoonable they are. The whole slow car fast thing could definitely apply!

Parking a car in The City can be a real pain in the ass and expensive as hell. Luckily, SF has some great public transit. Buy a Muni pass and get the full San Fran experience! Mix it up with cable cars, the street car along the Embarcadero, bus rides, and use taxis when you need (they're everywhere and pretty quick). You can easily blow a full day without ever leaving the city, but if you HAVE to get out, try to catch a bus across the Golden Gate. You can get some great pics from the headlands.
Don't forget to grab some chowder at Fisherman's Wharf, check out Fort Point and The Presidio, grab an Irish Coffee at The Buena Vista, tour the USS Pampanito, and DEFINITELY grab a beer at the Vesuvio Cafe! Skip the Painted Ladies, unless you're a die-hard Full House fan. Not much to see there.

I had a 5 day trip in San Fran with my girlfriend. I just got home today. We had a 7 day visitor muni pass so we were able to use the bus often and ride the cable cars a bit too. We were staying on treasure Island so we relied on transit quite a bit. It actually worked quite well! Plus we biked over the Golden Gate so a car was uncessary for that. We only planned on doing a day in big basin forest and maybe a little driving on the pch. Well aware parking in the city would have been shit lol.

My family rented those about 10 years ago. It was some of the best fun I've had with the family. My parents were in one go-car, and my brother and I were in another. It was a blast, and a very different perspective on the city than walking or driving.
Beware the hills, though. With two people, the go-car won't make it up steep-ish hills, so the passenger has to jump out and run alongside. Fun and terrifying with traffic behind you! Especially fun watching your brother huff it up the hill behind you, though.
